Last Saturday night at 7:50 pm, I prepared my laptop to the channel CNN, I sat cozy on my bed waiting for Biden’s Presidential Speech. My mom was texting me an hour before to make sure I tune in and watch what Biden had to say.
I have been waiting since Tuesday and finally the news broke out Biden had won. My eyes were watering, watching happy people waving Biden and Harris signs and waving the American flag proudly. I saw people sitting on top of their cars, people wearing their masks appropriately, and waiting for Kamala Harris and Joe Biden to come out.
This was the moment, I know for the many different communities who voted for Biden, but also those who do not have the right to vote, have been waiting for.
When Kamala Harris came out, all I could see was that women empowerment and her confidence that she is going to be the first woman ever to become a Vice President and hold such a high position. She walked out to Mary J. Blige’s “Work That” which symbolizes a lot within the lyrics. Harris is the first for everything, first woman, first African American, first South Asian, and first daughter of an immigrant to become Madam Vice President.
One quote from her speech is “You chose hope and unity, decency, science and yes truth.” This is something the American people who voted for Biden and Harris want for this country. I know I want a better life here without racism, xenophobia, homophobia and more. I want unity in this country.
When Biden came out, the water works (I actually started crying) came out. I was so happy to see someone with morals, humility, and love for his country address the nation in such a positive way. His whole speech never bashed Republicans, or Trump but rather kept his intention on unity. Biden stated, “I pledge to be a president who seeks not to divide, but unify, who doesn’t see red states and blue states, only sees the United States.”
This is what the United States needs, a leader who wants to unify the country and make it a better place. Everything that Biden said came out of his heart, and always reminded the audience to “keep and spread the faith.”
After that victory speech, I celebrated with some reggaeton music blasting in my dorm room. I jokingly played "Te Boté” Remix by Nio Garcia, Casper Mágico, Darell to celebrate the United States finally throwing out Trump.
I had seen on Tik Tok throughout the week, people making fun of Trump with this song, so I thought it was an appropriate time to listen to it.
I am hopeful for the future of the United States and praying that we will unify as a nation again and many issues can soon be solved with new leadership.
We as the American people need to make sure we are holding the new administration accountable for their promises.
