J Quiles recently released “La Ultima Promesa” last week and it sounded like my throwback high school playlist. I first discovered J Quiles when he released his song “Orgullo” with J Balvin back in 2018 and I have been listening to him ever since.
I recently saw an article in which J Quiles mentioned he wanted listeners to have the same vibes from his previous “La Promesa” album and that is exactly what I was thinking of as I was listening to this album. It sounded so similar but where had I heard these similar melodies and vibes? J Quiles previous album of course. His voice is soothing, yet distinct.
I personally enjoyed “Americana” featuring Rauw Alejandro a lot from this album. I think their voices blend amazingly and both have dreamy voices. The lyrics are catchy and in a way I felt I can resonate with the lyrics. The lyrics I will go into depth are “La baby tiene un flow como de americana-na-na, Pero es latinoamericana-na-na..” I identify as Latin American since I was born in Washington D.C. but my mother’s parents are from Ecuador and my dad is from El Salvador. I feel that sometimes I am too American for some hispanics, or I am too hispanic for some Americans. I now have an anthem that supports the mix of identities I share.
Side note: Here is a fun picture of J Quiles and I on South Beach. I randomly had him on snapchat and saw he posted he was at the same beach as I was. So, I asked one of my friends to come with me and find him. We both walked on the beach and finally found J Quiles. He first lied and said he wasn’t J Quiles but I knew he was lying and he said “okay come sit here and take a picture.”
